The subject of lengthening the school year or day has been a controversial subject for awhile. Some people think that it will improve test scores and overall grades. However, many people disagree. I’m one of those who disagrees because we already dedicate most of our time to school including homework and projects. Additionally, some kids just don’t care how they perform, and money is too big of a problem in our nation at the moment. Students already spend seven hours a day in school Monday through Friday. On top of that we get homework assignments and projects. Some students play sports which requires extra time after school for practices and games. Some students have jobs in order to supplement their family or personal needs. We already have enough on our plates. Most students already don’t get enough sleep every night due to their busy schedules. We don’t get enough free time or time with family, and that’s crucial time for us. We need more time to relax not more time to work. Too much and we can become overly stressed causing health problems and a variety of other problems. Another area of concern is that some students just don’t care about how well they do in school. Their test scores will not change because they’re in school longer. When a student is disengaged about school, they usually aren’t going to change. Only the students who care are the ones that will succeed. More time in school gives the students who don’t care more time to fool around. Don’t punish the kids who try just because there are those who do not care. Changing the minds of those who don’t care is almost impossible. Adding more time will probably just make them angrier, and in return we will have more drop outs. After all, it’s a lot easier to not try than it is to try. Some kids will just keep that attitude, and there’s nothing you can do about it. As everyone knows, our economy right now isn’t the best. We need to be focusing on that. Our President does not seem to be helping the situation so we might as well try. Making the school days/year longer requires a lot of extra money. It requires money that we do not have. We need to be utilizing the money we do have in a productive manner. Lengthening school time isn’t a necessary thing. We already go longer than required each day. It won’t necessarily help test scores or student performance; so, why risk the money? Lengthening school doesn’t guarantee any better student performances or anything else. It gives us less free and social time. The kids that don’t care about their education aren’t going to change no matter how much we try. Our country doesn’t have the money to spend on it. Basically, there is no point in lengthening school.
